I recently received my 500mm lens back from Nikon and wanted to try it out with the D4 and 1.4tc extender. There was an overcast which is what I was looking for to see how it handle the situation. Well, what better than taking a short trip to see a pair of Bald Eagles with their two eaglets. It’s always good to watch them fly.

Looks like a good combo. Very cool eagle shots David. I have to make that trip one of these days. Interesting that he is flying away from the nest with a fish. Looks like he wanted a snack and didn’t want to share it with the youngster.
Thanks Tim. Far back and to the left is a large lake. I saw him swoop down but never come back up. I thought he may have landed and wished I was over there to catch some pictures. After waiting a little while and just over the trees he came in from the opposite direction. Taking me by surprise I almost missed the flyby. I don’t think it had any intention of landing. Just wanted to show them what a bass looked like. It made a wide turn and landed in the field behind the nest. The other eagle came down and both enjoyed some Friday fish. After picking it over pretty good it brought the remainder to the nest. The more I looked at the pictures the more I favored the flyby because it included the nest with the fly away. I am going to try and go again Saturday afternoon. Afternoon light is what you want with the sun behind you.

Thank you very much Avinash. I mostly (but not always) use a tripod with this set up. It doesn’t wear me out and it allows for a smooth panning motion. I try my best to pan with my center focus point on the bird. The D4 it allows me to set a minimum shutter speed giving me a better capture.

Ohh.. I have not yet started using my tripod, mostly taking hand held pictures. I think I should start using it so that I can get flight pictures as good as yours.
